How to start your skin journey

When I'm guiding you on your skin journey, I will always work in 6-week blocks:

1 to 4 weeks

This is where we implement a gentle skin routine to restore your skin's barrier and get the skin ready to take on stronger products, later down the track.

It's a marathon, not a sprint, and we need to train our skin like we're training for a marathon - take it slow, and gradually build up, or we'll do more harm than good.

This first 6 weeks is not only about using gentle products to restore the barrier - it's also about forming a routine, and getting into a habit. Once we've formed a habit, we can start building on our routine by gradually adding more products.

4 to 6 weeks

By this stage, we can expect to see some purging. Purging looks like you're having a breakout or a reaction, but it's completely normal.

At this point, your skin is adjusting to new products, and your skin cells are turning over at a quicker rate than what they're used to. This skin cell turnover can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, red bumps, and flaky skin.

Compare it to having sore muscles when you start a new exercise routine - your body is taking time to adjust, and you need to push past this uncomfortable phase.

End of 6 weeks

This is where we check in and see how your skin is going. By now, your purging should have slowed down.

If your purging has slowed down - we can introduce a new ingredient into your routine.

If your purging hasn't slowed down - it's not a good time to throw another ingredient into the mix. We need to push on for another 4 weeks, or until the purging clears.

Once your purging has cleared

We will reassess where your skin is at. Are you happy with the results and your current routine?

If yes - great! You can continue with this routine going forward, and there's no need to introduce anything new.

If no - it's time to introduce a new ingredient. This is usually an exfoliant to further speed up skin cell turnover, and to start creating channels for active ingredients to be better absorbed in the future.

1 to 6 weeks after introducing a new ingredient

Just like when we first started, we're going to take it slooooow. We will expect to see some purging again, because we've introduced a new ingredient that's going to speed up skin cell turnover even further.

6 weeks after introducing a new ingredient

Again, we will check in and see how your skin is going. By now, your purging should have slowed down.

If your purging has slowed down - we can introduce another new ingredient into your routine.

If your purging hasn't slowed down - it's not a good time to throw another ingredient into the mix. We need to push on for another 4 weeks, or until the purging clears.

Once your purging has cleared

We will (again) reassess where your skin is at. Are you happy with the results and your current routine?

If yes - great! You can continue with this routine going forward, and there's no need to introduce anything new.

If no - it's time to introduce a new ingredient.

Every 6 weeks, we will reassess and add a new product, and create a new routine to incorporate your new products safely and effectively.

At a minimum, the process of adding every possible skincare ingredient can take 24 weeks (or 6 months!), so patience is the key, and the results are more than worth the wait.
